One of the common situations i face when creating schedules for clients is where / how to insert or how to include an athletes existing group workout schedule into their training routine. One thing to note is that i really like group training, BUT I also find it distracting or detrimental at times for folks when they aren't getting the training session they really need or have asked for.
Things i like about group training? It's great for motivation, social interaction, while keeping training fresh and different. At times the group training is great when you need to push yourself through a hard workout. The group can provide motivation when you really need a supreme effort!
Things i don't like? Well really there is nothing that i don't like about group training. It's more related to athletes reactions to group training, causing them to take actions detrimental to their race preparation.
Therefore, when choosing groups for training here are some considerations or questions to think about when including it in your race preparation:
* Is the group consistently going harder or easier than the training you prefer to do?
* Can you control your emotions and actions in the group when they are doing something that is different than what may be best for your preparation?
* Is training with the group the difference between doing a workout or not doing workout?
If my clients enjoy group sessions, i encourage them to join for all the reasons i like the comraderie of the group. If it becomes detrimental to their stated goals for improvment, THAT's when when we look at changing.
Enough for now ... next update i'll have some answers to the questions above, discuss when and when not to do the group thing AND when you should maybe consider "small group training".
Best ... DL
