What a busy weekend October 13th and 14th were for me and alot of folks. While i was in Kona running around, there were also Train To Endure Team members racing in Dallas (Toyota US Open) and San Jose (Rock & Roll Half Marathon).
Starting Dallas
Chuck Sloan ... man i hate to say it but maybe i should have told Chuck not to start after he got hit by a flying deer (that had been hit by a car) about 10 days out from the race. Chuck ended up flatting on the bike and had to take a ride back to T2. Being the fighter that he is Chuck looked at his run shoes and said, "what the heck" ... promptly he proceeds to go run a 32min 10k "for fun", as he put it. Watch for Chuck to light it up next year as he has a bit of a fire in his belly!
Amanda Erwin ... in the middle of her preps for a season closer at the Soma Half Amanda string together a nice race (though a little fatigued) to finish 7th amateur overall. Watch for a nice race from her the last weekend of October down in Tempe, Az.
San Jose R&R Half Marathon
Marie Muchow ... on only a small amount of rest as she is prepping for the Las Vegas marathon, Marie was seconds shy of a half marathon PR! This is a great sign that her fitness is on track for her virgin marathon experience. It's also good to see that her 1:45 half marathon goal is WELL within reach
Ironman Hawaii
Bob Shebest ... gotta give a shout out to my pal Bob for his great race in Kona. We don't work alot together on things but it's nice to know that i can be a small part of his great efforts. In the past we have worked on other concepts or training/racing and this year we worked on re-tooling and simplifying his race day nutrition. Happy to say he nailed it AND the race ... a Kona PB in 9:35
Rob Chance ... a three year progression ends in a life best performance at the 2007 Hawaii Ironman World Championship. At 45 years old Rob was in the best shape of his life and it goes to show if one can be patient and healthy over a three year window the improvement keeps coming! Good on-ya Rob. Rob has a nice write up on over at his blog for reading the details: http://www.robchancesworld.blogspot.com/
John Lander ... the 66 year old fountain of youth was a wonderful site to see taking care of business out on the lava fields on October 13th. Though he cut things a little close during the swim John was a machine as he mowed through the rest of the course with precision. It's been a great process to see John evolve not only as an athlete over the past couple years but to see him continue to grow as a person. He has been a model student AND a role model for us "younger" folks and goes to prove that you can teach an old dog some new tricks. The evolution of John's fitness and confidence is a treat to be a part of. John, thanks for sharing.
That's it for now and congratulations to all. Next up is the Soma Half and Ironman Florida for a bunch of folks. I'm going to do my best to update the blog a little more often with thoughts on training, coaching motivation and general happenings here! Thanks for the suggestions everyone ... DL
